NATASHA TUROVSKY
Natasha Turovsky is an accomplished artist who has made acclaimed contributions to the Montreal and international artistic communities through her musicianship on stage, her unique mastery with the paintbrush and through her artistic direction of Orchestre Nouvelle Génération
Natasha’s artistic recognition was first gained through her musical talent as a professional violinist. She toured nationally and internationally with I Musici de Montreal for over 25 years. In parallel, during the early 90s, she began to develop a fascination for visual art, where the canvas became a place of experimentation that permitted her to express another facet of her creativity. In 1992 she decided to pursue visual art professionally and enrolled in the Fine Arts program at Concordia University where she specialized in painting and printmaking. Natasha has since produced hundreds of paintings and monotypes, along with several large scale works for opera sets as well as series of paintings made after such musical cycles as Song of the Earth by Mahler and Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky.
Since her first solo exhibition in Montreal in 1995, she has exhibited, individually and in group shows, more than 50 times around the world. Her works have been shown most notably in Barcelona, Cleveland, Boston, New York, Sarasota, Montreal, Quebec and Hong Kong. Private and corporate collectors boast Natasha’s paintings on their walls in Canada, the United States, England, Spain, France, Russia and China.
In 2006, together with her father, Yuli Turovsky, and digital artists, Gael Hollard and Marie-Josée Auclair, Natasha made a short film : Pictures at an Exhibition (Choreographed paintings). This animation based on Natasha’s paintings made to Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition”, was presented and performed live with I Musici de Montréal and toured in the United States, Spain, Brazil, Canada and Colombia. The short film was also selected by several international festivals including the prestigious Syracuse International Film Festival and Cannes Short Film Corner. In November 2007 Natasha received an Excellence in Cinema award from the prestigious New York Independent film and video festival.
In 2011, Natasha made the decision to leave the stage to pursue her painting career full-time. Music remained a big part of her life and identity so when, in 2013, she was asked to become the artistic director of Orchestre Nouvelle Génération, she gladly accepted.
Natasha has always allowed her two artistic passions to inspire and feed off each other. As the artistic director of the Orchestre Nouvelle Génération, she often collaborates with artists from other artistic disciplines such as actors, writers and dancers as well as composers. Through these collaborations and her own artistic visions, Natasha continues to pursue new and more daring productions every year.
NATASHA TUROVSKY
