Lukus Uhlman is a Canadian ceramic artist based in Montreal, Quebec. Originally from Nova Scotia, Lukus draws deep inspiration from the Atlantic Ocean, its creatures, and the natural beauty of his childhood surroundings. His work combines traditional forms with playful design, intricate patterns, and rich textures, resulting in functional yet artistic pieces that evoke nostalgia and wonder.
Lukus has been dedicated to pottery for over a decade. He spent five years training at Atelier Spirale in Montreal under the guidance of Mahmoud Baghaeian, whose craftsmanship and high standards left a lasting impact on his approach to ceramics. Additionally, he attended a workshop with renowned potter Joan Bruneau, further refining his skills. Despite having no formal university training in ceramics, Lukus has immersed himself in the artform through continuous practice, experimentation, and self-education.
Specializing in porcelain functional ware, Lukus creates mugs, bowls, plates, vases, and soap dishes, always pushing the boundaries of his craft. His work is primarily produced at Ceramique Centrale, where he is owner and also teaches pottery, sharing his knowledge and passion with others. While highly skilled in wheel throwing, he continuously seeks to expand his expertise in hand-building techniques and surface decoration.
Beyond pottery, Lukus has a diverse artistic background. A trained opera singer, he initially pursued a career in music but found solace and creative fulfillment in ceramics. Unlike the fleeting nature of music, pottery offers a tangible and enduring artistic expression, a contrast he deeply appreciates. This perspective informs his work, as he strives to create pieces that leave a lasting impression on those who use them.
Lukus sells his ceramics at local craft fairs, particularly during the holiday season, and at 1001 pots as well as at Ceramique Centrale, his flagship studio space. His ambition is to see his work in museums and collections worldwide, using pottery as a medium to connect with artists across the globe. Through his ceramics, he hopes to inspire joy and curiosity, offering handmade objects that elevate everyday experiences. Passionate, dedicated, and ever-evolving, Lukus Uhlman is a potter whose journey continues to shape and redefine his artistic identity.
